The MCU: Impressions of the Cloak & Dagger Trailer
We just got our first official trailer for Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and I’ll provide some quick initial thoughts. The main consideration here is that we’re looking at a show that will be airing on Freeform. It’s Disney’s brand of TV aimed at the middle school / high school age group. Shadow Hunters from The Mortal Instruments universe is probably the show I’ve invested in more than any other from this channel. Based on this demographic aim, we then get a sense of why the show is so different from its Marvel TV cousins of the ABC-aired Agents of SHIELD and the dark and more mature Netflix-aired Defenders shows. It feels much more aimed at (or what used to be) the Twilight fan base to where it’s a little bit dark, but safe enough for this age group to watch. It’s because of this difference that my impressions and anticipation of the show are a higher than I would care to admit. If there’s that part of you that was too cool or macho for the Twilight saga films and you still watched them anyway, then you’re like me and anticipating this show. Plus, Cloak & Dagger is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which means it we’re green-lit to watch it.
I should point out that we already have a MCU high school story with Spider-Man: Homecoming, but Cloak & Dagger has a much different, darker, but still safe approach to the MCU. We do see in the trailer one Easter Egg with the Roxxon sign appearing on one of the buildings. This is the fictitious oil company Roxxon Energy Corporation featured in other Marvel films such as the Iron Man trilogy and the Agents of SHIELD TV show.
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is set to debut in early 2018 according to the official Marvel website. Are you excited for this TV show?
Here’s the trailer again below if you haven’t seen it.
