The Fast & Furious Cinematic Universe?
There’s the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Star Wars Cinematic Universe (SWCU), the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), and now a possible FFCU – the Fast and Furious Cinematic Universe. How are you allowed to have a cinematic universe? The common denominator with the MCU, SWCU, and even the DCEU is amount of money each film can make. The latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise doesn’t seem to be losing any box office groove as it just had the biggest global launch of all time at $685 million. Somewhere there’s a Universal exec saying, “Take that Disney!”
Another factor of the universe is taking characters from the large cast and creating spin-offs. That’s where the real cinematic universe starts to take shape. Marvel has solo hero films for Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man. Universal, according to the Hollywood Reporter, is looking at a spin-off for both Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham to capitalize on the crazy momentum of the franchise at the moment. These two actors were the show stealers of Fate and should be able to make the franchise’s first spin-off.
What do you think? Would you pay money to watch cheesy lines from The Rock and the Transporter? You can have that as your first pitch for a title to the movie Universal.
