The DCEU: Batman v. Superman & Suicide Squad Trailer Reactions

San Diego Comic Con 2015 is officially behind us! This year’s Comic Con brought unto us a plethora of content and goodies, but the two gems I want to focus on are the Batman vs Superman andSuicide Squad trailers. First let me say that watching the two trailers in Hall H was an amazing experience. DC & Warner Bros. capitalized on the absence of Marvel & Disney and showed true grit by unleashing their two current projects to the geek world. It’s an exciting time to be a fan of DC comics. It’s an exciting time to be a geek and comics fan, period.

Suicide Squad

Let’s begin with the Suicide Squad. David Ayer’s Suicide Squad project has been all over the internet. Viewers across the globe have seen Batman interact with Joker, Harley interact with Joker, and the rest of the Task Force X itneract with one another. We’ve seen more of Suicide Squad than Batman vs Superman. Ayer and some of the cast have been very vocal and open on social media stating that this project is going to be very special and epic. After Saturday morning, it’s hard to disagree. It’s also amazing that Ayer’s crew has gotten so much footage done.
The trailer opened with Amanda Waller having a private dinner with a decorated general, possibly General Eiling or Shrieve, and what seems to be a politician. Then out of nowhere, a slow and haunting rendition of the Bee Gees, I Started A Joke, began to play in the background. The rest was just pure visual art. Every member of the suicide squad was featured in some capacity. Ayer’s movie has a definite Nolan-Dark Knight feel to it. Soon after the trailer was shown, Ayer brought out the entire cast. As the full cast was assembled, Will Smith, who plays Deadshot, gave a 3 count and the entire cast showed a united front.

As for appearances in trailer, it was amazing to finally see in action, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc. We’ve seen screen shots here and there, but it’s good to finally see them in motion and acting their characters out. There are definitely more characters to explore in this film, but the two roles that the masses have been worried about were the Joker and Harley Quinn. Jared Leto’s heavily tatted Joker took many for a loop and some people still don’t know how to feel about it. Harley Quinn’s rather revealing outfit had many fans upset, but those comments were in vain after creator Bruce Timm responded positively to the design. This trailer should put many at ease with the appearances of Jared Leto as the Joker and Margot Robbie’s as Harley Quinn. However, if you’re not swayed by the trailer or anyone’s opinion, you never will be. So either accept it or apply for a job as a costume designer at Warner Bros.
As it stands right now, the Suicide Squad trailer has an estimated 97% approval or “thumbs up” rating. Not bad. Suicide Squad is set to hit the silver screen on August 5, 2016.
Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice

The Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer could be the best trailer that we have ever seen. The trailer was not only amazing in its own right, but it was very emotional for many fans who have been waiting 20 to 25 years for a Batman and Superman movie. Zack Snyder and company have really made something special here and we’re hoping it doesn’t disappoint. There are a number of movies out there that have had fantastic theatrical trailers, but have bombed on the silver screen. Zack Snyder’s films are no exception. His films are known for their artist nature and stellar visuals, however his films are also known for lackluster performances. Snyder’s works are often appreciated years after they are released.
It must be noted that the fear and negativity towards the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman has vanished. Affleck was greeted with a loud and roaring audience when he was announced in Hall H. The Batman we saw in the trailer felt like a combination of every Batman from every medium. It was as if Snyder took pieces from the Rocksteady Arkham games, Bruce Timm’s animated series’, traditional comic book lore from various Batman writers, and created his own version of the caped crusader. The moments when Batman used his grappling gun and when he used his agility to take down a few guards was enough to make a statement nominating Affleck’s batman as the definitive movie version of batman.

The glimpses of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman were a bit distracting from the main idea of the film, but also very fulfilling. Wonder Woman’s appearance on the silver screen is just as substantial as Batman and Superman sharing the same screen. It’s as Snyder thought to himself, why not have it all? DC fans across the globe will be having their cake and devouring it as well. It was also very awesome to finally see Snyder’s Lex Luthor. The biggest questions surrounding the movie is probably the choice of Jessie Eisenberg as Luthor. Fans are used to the tall, dark, and brooding Luthor from the animated series’. However, Eisenberg is a talented actor and brings many great qualities to the character. We’re all going to have to wait and see before we can pass judgement on his performance.

The trailer was riddled with Easter eggs galore and enough side information to lead us to believe that this movie is over 3 hours. If it is indeed a 3 hour movie, I don’t see any fan taking issue with it. There are so many intricate details about Batman’s backstory and the repercussions of Superman’s actions from Man of Steel. This movie aims to address the issues that people had with Man of Steel and unleash the DC Cinematic Universe. And although this epic trailer shed some light on the film, there is still so much to be seen and understood. For example, where was Aquaman? or Cyborg? or any of the other supporting actors? Alas, there’s a lot to be excited for in 2016. Speaking for fans everywhere, we’re all in.
As it stands right now, the Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer also has an estimated 97% approval or “thumbs up” rating. Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice is set to hit theaters on March 25, 2016.
